Message to the skill of the drivers in that "inferior" open-wheel racing series.
If EVER there was a case of corporate greed putting human lives and safety behind profit, the IRL is it. The entire series spawned from the George family deciding their cut of the deal wasnt big enough. SO they torpedoed CART, a series that was easily on par with formula 1, debatably superior considering the array of locales, the speed and power of the cars, the caliber drivers it featured, and the fact that it had the Indy 500 on the schedule.

Indy 500 was a dangerous enough race, and it doesnt have near the banking that these NASCAR tracks have because it isn't designed for stock cars, it is designed for open wheel race cars.

Texas Motor Speedway 2001 anybody?

They had to cancel the doomed race, because the human body simply cannot operate in those conditions.

Putting those extremely high-powered, low-weight, cars on NASCAR ovals with high banking is a total recipe for disaster.

It puts the drivers in a position where their instinct to win is pitted against a very frequent, very high risk of catastrophe. This sort of catastrophe only happens in Formula 1 in the most freakish of circumstances, but in the IRL every lap, every turn is exceedingly dangerous as soon as there is any traffic present. The most dangerous moments in Formula 1 are typically under braking, in the IRL they are at full throttle. This is the crux of the matter.

The term "the big one" doesn't exist in Formula 1, and it never existed in CART. This sums it up perfectly.
